Coaching is definitely not a therapy and it is not counselling. Although your coach may use some of the same skills as a therapist, the process is different.
Therapies such as counseling are about why your life is on hold. These help you to identify, explore and overcome the blocks that are stopping you from moving forward. Many, but not all people, using therapists find that these blocks are having a negative effect on their physical and/or mental well-being.
Coaching is all about moving forward. It assumes that you are taking responsibility for your life and are willing to take the necessary action to achieve your potential.
Coaching is not a training programme. Your coach does not teach you how to live or give you a list of must/must not actions to achieve your goal. However, what will happen over a period of coaching is that you begin to develop your own “self coaching” skills. The way that your coach questions you becomes part of your everyday. So when you want to do something, you begin to question yourself in a similar way – and reach a decision that is right for you.
